About This Safari
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the “Seven New Wonders of the World”. Nowhere in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as this — over two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya during July through October.
The migration must cross the Mara River, where hungry crocodiles lie in wait. This dramatic crossing is one of the highlights of the entire safari — as the animals try to cross the river alive, the tension is palpable and unforgettable.
In the Maasai Mara, the herds will be hunted, stalked, and run down by the larger carnivores. The Mara also boasts one of the largest densities of lion in the world — no wonder it's the home of the BBC Wildlife channel's famed Big Cat Diary.
The Journey
Day 1
Departing from the capital of Kenya, Nairobi, we drive down the escarpment via the floor of the scenic Great Rift Valley. We arrive at Maasai Mara Game Reserve in time for lunch in the afternoon. We check you into the tents that are self-contained, fitted with feature beds and en suite bathroom areas. At 16:00 we take our first thrilling game drive in the Maasai Mara — one of East Africa's top safari destinations. We return at 18:00 for dinner and overnight. In the night you can hear a chorus of different animal sounds as they communicate in the darkness — more than enough reason to visit.
Day 2
After breakfast we depart for a full day game drive with a picnic lunch at the Mara River migration bridge. This day is spent game viewing in Kenya's finest wildlife park. Our morning and afternoon game drives take us in search of Africa's Big Five. Wherever you go in the vast Maasai Mara you will see Maasai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and hippos in great numbers. Lions are commonly seen basking or surveying the plains. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot, but reasonably common. The ultimate highlight is the annual wildebeest exodus — witnessing over two million animals on their great journey.
Day 3
We start the day with an early morning game drive from 06:30 — you might be lucky enough to witness a hunt. We then depart from our safari camp and take an en-route game drive through the Maasai Mara Reserve before heading back to bustling Nairobi, arriving at approximately 16:00 in the afternoon. This unforgettable 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari ends upon arrival back in Nairobi.
